ANNOUNCEMENT - FEBRUARY 1, 2009
In 2009, The Conflict-Free Diamond Council will move beyond recommendations to Official Endorsements. As part of our Diamond Audit Program, we will rate and grade certification programs, participating brands, and retailers along a stringent set of best practices.
The Diamond Audit Program is in direct response to overwhelming questions from consumers wanting to know where to buy their diamonds. The Diamond Audit Program will also provide a level playing field for evaluating all stakeholders in the diamond industry.
|
Although no "certified conflict-free diamond" programs are in existence (the Kimberley Process needs to be more effective), The Conflict-Free Diamond Council recommends two certification programs and one retailer.
Collectively, they provide more than a dozen diamond brands that follow best practices for certified conflict-free diamonds. If every diamond stakeholder (miners, cutters and polishers, wholesalers, retailer, and governmental organizations) followed the best practices established by these organizations, then the conflict or blood diamond trade would be mostly eradicated.
