Project: Medical Supplies to Sierra Leone Money Donated: $9,000 Date: October 2007
The Conflict-Free Diamond Council raised the majority of funds to send two, 40 foot medical containers to amputee hospitals in the Kono and Bo regions of Sierra Leone. The supplies brought sorely needed relief to victims of the global conflict diamond trade.
The Conflict-Free Diamond Council worked with both MedShare International (the leading organization dedicated to distributing surplus medical supplies to health care institutions in developing countries) and Brilliant Earth (the leader in socially and environmentally responsible fine jewelry) to sponsor the medical containers.
Conflict diamonds helped fuel a
decade-long civil war in Sierra Leone that has left lasting scars on
victims who lost limbs brutally. Today, thousands
of amputees still await justice and fair reparations, years after
the civil war officially ended. In addition to receiving prosthetic
limbs to help amputee victims, hospitals will be able to choose the
supplies in each container that will be most useful to their patients.
